Lorenz “Larry” Kolm passed away on October 8, 2026, at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy of kindness, generosity, and compassion that will continue to touch countless lives.
Born on July 9, 1946, Larry was the son of Lorenz and Florence (nee Schmidt) Kolm. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved sisters, Linette Maedge and Ione Pence.
Larry spent his professional career working as a bookkeeper for the railroad, where he remained until his retirement. Beyond his career, he had a deep appreciation for history and the beauty of things from generations past. An avid antique dealer, Larry especially loved primitive antiques and farmhouse-style treasurers.
A man of faith and community, Larry was an active member of the United Church of Christ. He also enjoyed the simple pleasures of life, particularly playing bingo, socializing and spending time among friends.
Perhaps one of Larry’s most meaningful legacies was his extraordinary dedication to animal welfare. With a compassionate heart and a commitment to helping those without a voice, Larry devoted countless hours to fundraising efforts benefiting animal rescue organizations throughout the region.
He was especially involved with Tree House Wildlife and Happy Tails Thrift Shop, an organization founded by sister, Ione. Over nine years, Happy Tails generated more than $141,000 in proceeds benefiting humane societies, animal shelters, spay and neuter programs, wildlife centers, and rescue organizations across several counties surrounding Edwardsville.
Behind those numbers were countless animals given a second chance, organizations strengthened by generosity, and communities made kinder through the efforts of people like Larry.
Larry understood that making a difference did not always require grand gestures. Sometimes it meant giving your time, sharing your talents, supporting a cause, or simply showing up when help was needed.
His life serves as a reminder that compassion is a legacy all its own. Larry will be deeply missed by his extended family, his many friends, and the animal welfare community to which he gave so much of himself. Though his presence will be missed, the kindness he shared and the good he accomplished will live on.
A life well lived. A heart generously given. A legacy that will continue through every life he helped save.
According to Larry’s wishes, no services will be held.
