John J. Johnson, Jr., age 80, of Highland, passed away on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, MO.

He was born on May 31, 1946, in Springfield, MA, a son of the late John J. Johnson, Sr. and Ruth (nee Warner) Johnson. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, William Johnson and stepdaughter, Autumn Hawkins-Meadows.

John married Maxine (nee Landert) Johnson on January 18, 1985, in Granite City, who survives in Highland. He is also survived by a stepson, Scott Hawkins of Wildwood, MO and a brother-in-law, Steve (Judi) Landert of Lakeland, FL.

John was a lifelong scholar, dedicated attorney, and avid explorer who brought a deep curiosity to everything he did. A 1964 graduate of Classical High School in Springfield, MA, John pursued a diverse and rich educational path. He earned his BA in Philosophy from Coe College, a master's in Russian literature and a PhD from Syracuse University, a law degree from St. Louis University and later an MBA from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIU-E). Professionally John was a respected attorney with Brown & James, P.C. He took great pride in giving back to his profession, regularly teaching ethics and workcomp for the Missouri Bar. John's passion for learning extended far beyond the classroom and courtroom. Together with his beloved Maxine, he traveled the world, exploring 105 countries. His deep expertise in Russian culture allowed him to lead 40 guided group tours to Russia, sharing his knowledge and love for the country with others. Closer to home, John was a devoted community member and an enthusiastic outdoorsman. He was an active member of the Highland Garden Club, the Highland Historical Society, the Madison County Bar, the Madison County Historical Society, and the Missouri Botanical Garden. While he loved gardening, his greatest joy in nature was his profound love for trees.

John's wishes were to be cremated with no services or burial.

In lieu of flowers, plants, or other gifts, memorials may be made to the Highland Garden Club or the Highland Historical Society and will be received by mail at Moss Funeral Home, 1501 9 ^th St., Highland, IL 62249, who is serving the family.
